Fifty Shades of Grey (MUSIC) & Personal Update

Yeah, I know that I haven't been posting regularly for a while. But by now I'm sure that some of you that are regulars know what the reasons really is. Anyways, some of what I'm posting today is cut over from a different blog. But don't worry, I totally have permission to do it. (After all, I wrote it ^_~)

You know, I'm sure the few of you that remember a write up I did about the book 50 Shades of Grey(if you missed it, that's fine it was at another location and I'd prefer not to have it here), know how I feel about the idea of a movie. I'm far from, excited about it. But I was intrigued when I logged into my email at the library and Projekt Records had sent me an email about an album. Not a formal one, sort of a what if we did it type deal.

So I thought about it for a second and realized that some of you might enjoy a chance at experiencing the album too. After all, we all like new music.

As far as the MOVIE is concerned, I have mixed feelings really. I assume that they will have sanitized it to some degree in order to be able to show it in movie theaters and not be classified as pornography. So we shall see what happens when it does finally release.

We already know it will get a great turnout initially due to the books popularity. But that doesn't mean that the movie is good. It just means that there are a lot of people that are interested in seeing the imaginary brought to play visually.

It's been a long while since I've posted anything. I do apologize for that. I'm sorry that I've been offline. But you already know that there's not much that I can do about it. Yet that's besides the point. I'm sure if you're still reading the blog, you're more interested in what I've been up to.

The past few months have been a rather strange adventure.

In December I had the pleasure of experiancing my first Christmas themed haunted houses. Now you might think that it sounds strange, but it was a fun thing. I went to them with my good friends. So a small group, but far better than going alone.

New years eve, I went to Niagara Falls with my brothers and their significant others. Why? I'm sure many of you know how cold it is all over the north east parts of north america. So the idea of being out in the cold at night seems to be a bit stupid. Yeah, it was a bit of an odd idea with it being so cold.

But there was a concert at the Hard Rock Cafe, free to anyone who wanted to come to the guitar drop. It was great. We missed the first of the three bands. But we got to see Dirty Smile, and Theory of a Deadman. It was a lot of fun and the bands handled the cold well. The crowd was a bit smaller than they were probably expecting. But you can be sure that the people that were there enjoyed it.

January, was been a month full of cold days. It was rather bitter. Beyond that there's not a lot to complain about. But even so there isn't really a lot to be declaring fantastic either. But I guess this is enough of an update for now.

For those with more curiosity, that may know me better, there's more. You always know that there's more. But right now, y'all don't really need to hear about problems. As February rolls in, let's just hope that things start to improve. that's all we can ask for

Talk about a dream! I kind of wish they'd have him sing more often. Just wanted to share one of my favorite characters with you. It's always a treat to see him do something artful.


Oh, and just because we all know how much I like my villains. I found this fun video that shows some great funny clips of the Joker from Batman the animated series. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did picking it out. Oh! You even get to hear him sing some Christmas music at the beginning!

History and Music : The Battle Of New Orleans

American history is a rather funny flexible thing. We're often changing things, and a lot of battles are memorialized in different ways. Today we're looking at the song The Battle of New Orleans, which is about a Battle that actually happened in 1815. It's commemorated in a song that takes a number of  liberties with the facts. But we all know that there are artists licenses that are frequently taken.

There are two versions of this song though. After all, every battle does have 2 sides. Sometimes the side that doesn't come out on top doesn't take it all that well. But it's still a good song no matter which version you prefer. I think they're an interesting perspective look at the situation, even though it's kind of humorous. They're also a sign of the times.

Even this long length of time after the battle, there was still a need to have two separate windows to look at it. It's fascinating. Not completely unusual, since no one wants to be known as a coward  or as the losing side. Whether it's in good humor or not doesn't matter. People like to have at least some  positive light on their own side.

Just thought some of you might enjoy this small thing to think about. We often see songs done in English and other languages, but we often forget to think about how they change when that happens.

So I know that we've been off to a slow start so far in 2014, but it isn't for want of trying. I have been working on improving my hand in photoshop. Okay, so this past weekend we went to see the Boulevard Boo! Parade. It was a lot of fun and we got to see a variety of costumes. Unfortunately We didn't catch the whole parade on camera. Locally Grown : Cute Is What We Aim For

Music is an ever changing thing, and everyone takes something different from this fascinating art. Not only that there are always amazing things to learn. An example of this is that I recently learned, much to my surprise, a group that I've come to enjoy listening to is actually from Buffalo. I know, it shouldn't be a shock that I had no idea about where they're from. Most people generally don't know much about a band unless they're really into the group.

Anyway Cute Is What We Aim For is a band, not the newest band, but a good band just the same. I highly recommend them for those looking for some fun light rock music to listen to. Originally formed in 1999 there in Buffalo, New York they're a reminder that if you work at it, you can succeed. in 2001 they signed to a label, and have two albums out. The band line up changed over time, but that's not an unusual practice.

I know that there's a lot of you that love music. We all know not everyone is going to be a rock star, but there's nothing holding you back from using your musical talents for good. You can always volunteer with some of your friends to play some music at the community center for a small party, or maybe you could sing for some folks at the nursing home.

Anyway, what I mean to say is that you don't have to go somewhere flashy to be somebody. You don't have to have a lot of money. You don't HAVE to hurt other people. The Locally Grown section is going to be presenting (sometimes in just small doses) people that are local to either Buffalo or San Diego, and sometimes, just offering a thought. It's not always about history, but rather enjoying the world around us. We're all part of this place, and if we work together it can be a wonderful place to live.

History and Music : The Sullivans

Artists are often inspired by things that happen in the world around them. Whether it's romance, amusements, war, or any other activity doesn't matter. They're often written in a romanticized manner which can often make an activity seem less threatening. Though some music is very effective at causing people to become interested in history, and look into things to learn. Not all things that are what they seem, and there can be a bit of depth to things.

As an example of this I'd like to share a song called "Sullivan" By Caroline's Spine with you. The song is based on something that happened during WWII. There's even a movie based on the event called The Fighting Sullivans. To keep things fairly short and simple though, the ship that the five Sullivan's were on was sunk by a torpedo, and through various events the five men died(can read specifics and things concerning it HERE). This song is basically a nod to the family, referencing their mother on the most part.

It's a well done song, and it isn't offensive. There are multiple dissections of the lyrics and examinations online but I think the song speaks for itself. I'd like to mention for our younger readers back in Buffalo, that you can see one of the two ships that's been named The Sullivans right there in Buffalo at the naval park. The destroyer ship was donated to the city's park in the late 1970's, after having been kept in the ship reserves. I bet you could even do a nice project on the ship for school. Ask your mom, I know she'd LOVE to take you to see it.

"Change Your Blue Star To Gold." This is a reference to a practice that was adopted by people during WWI which has since become common practice. It refers to a plain white background flag with a blue trim that has a Blue star on it which is displayed to represent that a family member is serving active duty. When the flag changes, to a gold star, it lets people know that the family member has passed away during service without having to specify how.

Something a Little Different

Sometimes it is interesting to listen to music from other places and times. It can be soothing as well as relaxing. This particular song was fairly bouncy, and while I may not actually know what is being sung about, it's enjoyable to listen to.

I do apologize for the lack of information in most of the posts this past week, but to be honest I haven't been feeling very well. I've been feeling very sick, and I haven't been able to post much because my attention span isn't really there to be able to.
