What's on The Screen? : Joker

You know a lot of the time we like to stay in our comfort zone when it comes to films. Usually because there are hesitations. When it comes to foreign films a lot of people don't like reading subtitles. Then the next complaint I've heard is that the audio doesn't sync. In this instance I chose to watch the film with the subtitles. And it was worth all the reading.

Joker is basically a comedy film based on the idea of a forgotten village. We get to see them trying to get help for their home, and we also get to see them use aliens as a means to an ends. But what I liked most about the film was the music. The music was wonderful and makes you want to dance. I might not know what they're singing about, but it's great to listen to.

The reviews I read after watching the film were fairly negative. Which surprised me since I thought it was a rather creative storyline. It was fresh for me, and was fun. I do recommend the movie if you have the time and patience to red the subtitles. The costumes for some of the aliens were amazing. So if you're interested in some unique costumes, take some time and look them up. You won't be disappointed.

Oh! And side note, just because you're the wild card doesn't mean you can't amount to anything. Sometimes that's what makes you able to win the game.

Late Response

This is a sufficiently late response about a sermon that was given on 3/9. If you weren't there, don't worry. But if you were there is a chance that you would have a better idea about what my notes are about.

First off I marked most of my notes into the margins of the church bulletin so there really isn't a ton of them but I do think that they may be of interest to some of you. You know what the bulletin is, if you don't leave me a comment and your email address and I will happily send you a picture of one. My notes were written as responses seemed necessary at points. But we all know that sermons aren't supposed to be turned into question and response sessions. And they're not really an open forum discussion either.

Secondly it was the first sermon in Lent. Pastor is presenting an interesting series of sermons entitled "Red Letters (Finding Our Story In The Story Of Jesus)". Meaning the focus is on the spoken words of Jesus, as well as his actions. This particular sermon focused on Matthew 4: 1-11, and was titled "Tempted."

So what were my responses/observations? They're things I thought some of you may find interesting.

  • Destiny is not certain. It is in flux due to the actions of all those surrounding you. Your choices and theirs affect the outcomes over time.
  • Lent acknowledges hardship, but ultimately shows that it can be defeated.
  • Change is an element of time and consciousness.
  • Effort is all relevant to the amount of desire one has to acquire the change or desired result.
  • Simplicity is reflective of perspective.
Now there was something Pastor brought up that intrigued me. HALT: used as an acronym to acknowledge situations that leave people open to temptation. It shows the four states in which people should pause before making any decisions.

  • Hungry
  • Angry
  • Lonely
  • Tired
These stated of mind leave people open to temptation. Whether it's a vice or some other negative, these states of mind leave room for them to creep into your thoughts. By putting them together into HALT, it's fairly simple to reflect on them.

Now, as to the sermon the following week on 3/16. This sermon was called "Boxes" and was a reflection on Matthew 17: 1-8. The point of this particular sermon was that people try to put God into a box. But boxes aren't always big enough to contain what we try to keep inside them.

In a round about way boxes can be likened to stereotypes and expectations. Personally I found this sermon slightly distressing. It had nothing to do with Pastor, or what he was saying as a whole. It had to do with the fact that there is a lot of things going on for me right now. Sermons are supposed to do that though, not distress, but they're intended top make guests of the church and members of the congregation reflect and contemplate the content of the sermon.

I didn't take specific notes this particular Sunday. I listened in the nursery with my nephews.

Why did I find this particular sermon distressing? I feel limited lately. It feels like people only see me for what they want me to be, not everything that I can be. What they have a tendency to forget is that there is a lot more to life than just what other people expect. If we only ever did what other people expected of us, we would never achieve our full potential. So, I suppose my observation and sentiment is that no one should be boxed up.

Remember, there's a very popular old saying; Think outside the box. Life can be so much better if you do.

Alright, well that's enough on my thoughts on the sermons at church. I know not all of you really are all that religious but it doesn't hurt anything to think about the messages, since they can be useful outside of the course of religion too.

Why Trust Is Worth It

This weeks Thursday video looks at the concept of trust. It's amazing the way two people can move together, and that those movements can be so simple, so beautiful, and so inspiring. They tell a story, hopefully you enjoy it and see something here like I did.

Kick Butts Day

Today is Kick Butts Day! What does that mean? Well, it means that today is a day to raise awareness about youth smoking, and help teens and youth see the toll it takes on them and the environment. There are a number of ways that you can help to raise awareness about the negative effects of tobacco products. So why not take a chance at trying to hep someone realize the negative impact that their bad habit has not only on themselves but also the people that are around them.

The Kick Butts Day Website is full of activities, ideas and facts to help you look at the day and maybe plan your own awareness moments. They don't necessarily have to happen today. After all any day is a good day to take a step in a healthier direction.

Identity

Today's short video is called Identity. It looks at the idea of masks and individuality on an interesting level. I think a number of us can understand the frustration of having to pretend at times that we're something we aren't. But...what if we didn't?

History and Music : The Battle Of New Orleans

American history is a rather funny flexible thing. We're often changing things, and a lot of battles are memorialized in different ways. Today we're looking at the song The Battle of New Orleans, which is about a Battle that actually happened in 1815. It's commemorated in a song that takes a number of  liberties with the facts. But we all know that there are artists licenses that are frequently taken.

There are two versions of this song though. After all, every battle does have 2 sides. Sometimes the side that doesn't come out on top doesn't take it all that well. But it's still a good song no matter which version you prefer. I think they're an interesting perspective look at the situation, even though it's kind of humorous. They're also a sign of the times.

Even this long length of time after the battle, there was still a need to have two separate windows to look at it. It's fascinating. Not completely unusual, since no one wants to be known as a coward  or as the losing side. Whether it's in good humor or not doesn't matter. People like to have at least some  positive light on their own side.

Just thought some of you might enjoy this small thing to think about. We often see songs done in English and other languages, but we often forget to think about how they change when that happens.

Music Monday 8

It sure seems like music artists are getting younger and younger these days. I wonder if that's a good thing or a bad thing? After all, their voices haven't changed yet... who knows what they're going to end up sounding like. But it's interesting to see what they're coming up with them for now.

Plastic

.
This short film called Plastic is interesting for a few reasons. One, it illustrates how much people wish they could change themselves. Two, it shows how silly we may look if we did have the ability to change ourselves willy nilly. I hope you enjoy todays choice ^_^

Travel

Sometimes we have to make choices and decisions that will change things for more than just ourselves. These moments in turn help to define each of us as individuals. Over time we show change, and we learn how to overcome adversity and fear. It is by acceptance of who and what we are that we learn how to do things the way that we need to. We can be courageous, we can be afraid, and we can hesitate. But in the end we can't really expect change to stop just because we don't want it to happen.

Change is inevitable.

In this particular instance I'm changing again. In some ways it's not really drastic. But I want to try and be accepting. I want to try and stay focused. I want to try an make sure things go right from here on in. But we all know that nothing ever goes according to plan. If it did go according to plan we would be very cynical. Because not everyone agrees as to how something should go.

We don't always get what we want. Sometimes we have to travel, to learn about ourselves and see the world in a new light. It's time to travel again. But waiting to go has been driving me absolutely nuts. You have no idea how crazy it drives me to wait and not know what is really going to happen. Today's the day to travel though. So don't be surprised if you see some odd content in the future, or a changed theme in posts.

Buffalo is much colder than San Diego this time of year. I'm not looking forward to the snow. In fact I'm dreading it to a certain degree. It's been a while since you heard anything personal from me. The reasons why are a bit complex. But you may hear a bit more from me soon enough about new things, new place, and old faces. Though many of the new places are really old ones just getting to be seen again.

I don't know what to do with myself to be honest. I've been going through a bit of irritation and annoyance trying to decide. But I'm at a loss. There's so much to do, and so much that is going to be hard to work through. I'm sure that it will be fine though.

I just need to learn to be more patient.

"I hate being patient! Patience is for wimps."

Oh and side note... Look what I have to look forward to.

Just Visiting : SeaWorld San Diego

Okay, so this past week I was treated to a unique and interesting experience.  Rather, to me it was rather unique because I'd never been to SeaWorld before. At least, not that I know. Let me just say this, it was a very interesting place to go and there's really a lot to see.

SeaWorld San Diego
500 Sea World Dr
San Diego, CA 92109

Now, when they told me we were going to SeaWorld, I was kinda intrigued. Because I didn't really know what to expect. So I decided we were going to bring home Shamu in the trunk. I was told nope, and shrugged. I was surprised to find out how big they really are. But they're adorable too. But I'm really kind of getting a head of myself I think.

Ok so everyone knows that there are a lot of animals at SeaWorld. And a lot of things there are educational, and it's interesting to have the chance to actually touch some of the animals. I really liked the tide pool area. I got to pick up and look at a live starfish. I found out that it's actually called a bat star. (aiiii! See there are bat's in the ocean!) Bat Stars come in different colors, and the reason isn't really for anything beyond basic genetics. It's the same sort of thing that decides if we're going to be a blond, brunette, or a ginger.

I also got to poke at a sea urchin, which I was surprised to see wiggle it's stick like pokey barbs around when I gently poked them. THEN it started it sprouted little tendril things which I found out are it's feet. None of the tide pool animals move very fast though. I even got to poke a sea anemone which felt like a wet sticky rubber band.

I also liked getting to pet marshmallow fish again. AKA rays. They really do feel like wet marshmallows. I love how they move in the water, they kind of flip they're fins and tails so elegantly in the water. They're amazing to watch and seem so sweet.

The whales though. Just...WOW, I never really realized how big they really are. Or that they could splash so much. At the  Shamu Show, Polka Dot and me sat in t he splash zone (partially because the night before he had told me that I wasn't being very courageous so I wanted to prove him wrong.) Yeah... by the time the whales were done splashing at the end of the show I looked like a drowned rat, and Polka Dot was very cranky and complaining that his sneakers were wet, and all his clothes were wet. But I didn't care, I think it was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it. I hadn't expected it, but I really did enjoy it.

Alright, so I know some of you were hoping to see something more interactive. Unfortunately I haven't gotten the piranha feeding video edited yet. I'll probably post the piranhas in the future, but for now it's on the back burner due to real life timing issues. So, for now here is a video of the whale show that someone kindly posted to you tube. So you can see why Polka Dot ended up all wet and cranky.

All in all, SeaWorld is a very enjoyable place to visit. I would definitely enjoy going again if I ever have a chance to in the future. But I learned a lot, and had a chance to see some things I never really ever would have thought about getting to see. So if you're thinking about going, you should. It's totally worth it.
